Street Services
The City of Asheville is dedicated to enhancing citizens’ quality of life by maintaining, repairing and replacing streets and other related infrastructure. The city works to ensure a safe road system through proper maintenance, rehabilitation and replacement of failed segments of pavement and all other related infrastructure while upholding the highest regard for customer satisfaction. The city also strives to maintain and improve traffic conditions to strengthen citizens’ sense of community.
Weeds in the curbs and around sidewalks continue to be a problem, especially towards the end of summer. Weeds and grass give Asheville an unkempt look and are becoming a concern of our citizens and guests. City Code of Ordinances (Chapter 16-3) stipulates that adjacent property owners are responsible for weeding and keeping sidewalks and gutters clean and neat. Here’s exactly what it states:
Sec. 16-3. Cleaning of sidewalks and gutters.
It shall be the duty of every occupant or tenant of improved property and of the owner of every vacant property within the city, in front of which the sidewalk has been paved, to keep such sidewalk clean and to do such sweeping and scraping as may be necessary to keep such sidewalk clean and free from snow, ice, dirt and trash and to render the sidewalk passable, comfortable and sightly and the gutter next to and along such sidewalk open and free from obstructions for the full width of the front.
(Code 1965, § 25-15)
Please help the community by keeping the sidewalks and gutters around your property weeded and clean. If see weeds and debris in or around sidewalks, please call the Streets Division at 259-5852 to report concerns. We will follow up with the complaint and remind adjacent property owners of their obligation to keep Asheville looking great.
The city’s Streets Division is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair and revitalization of streets, sidewalks, bridges, walls, tree trimming and mowing within the right-of-way, street sweeping and snow removal from streets within the city's jurisdiction.
