Recreation - Outdoor Recreation

The Outdoor Recreation Program offers exciting outdoor adventure and environmental education opportunities for all ages and abilities. You will find all you need to make your outdoor adventure plans for the upcoming season. Activities include summer adventure camps, hiking, mountain biking, rafting, skiing, snowboarding, backpacking, youth programs, senior programs, overnight trips and special events.

All programs are offered at a reasonable cost with lots of extra value built in. Most fees are noted as R and NR. "R" refers to the fee for an Asheville city resident (living within the city limits), and "NR" refers to the fee for a non-resident (living outside the city limits).

HOME SCHOOL ADVENTURES
(8-17 years old)

Sept. 1, Whitewater Rafting

Raft the beautiful Nantahala River through class 1-3 rapids. Rafters must weigh at least 60 lbs to raft.  Depart from Montford Recreation Center at 10:00 am;
return 6:00 pm.  Fee: $32 R; $35 NR.

 

Dec. 2, Waynesville Indoor WaterPark

An indoor adventure!  Depart at 10:30 am; return at 4:00 pm.  Fee: $9 R; $10 NR.

SCHOOL’S OUT ADVENTURES
(8-14 years old)

Oct.  4 . Whitewater Rafting
Raft the beautiful Nantahala River through class 1-3 rapids. This is a great trip for beginner rafters, participants must be able to swim.  Depart the Montford Center  at  9:00 am; return 5:00 pm. Fee: $32 R; $35 NR.

 

Oct. 22, Virginia Creeper Biking

We’ll head north to Damascus, VA where we’ll bike 17 miles along the beautiful VA Creeper trail.  Although the trip is mostly flat & downhill, riders must be very comfortable on bikes.  Bike & helmet rental is included in price.  Depart the Montford Center  at  9:00 am; return 6:00 pm. Fee: $40 R; $45 NR.

 

Nov. 11. Caving at Worley’s Cave

Explore Worley’s Cave, a private cave in Eastern Tennessee, and check out the amazing formations!  Depart at 9:00 am; return 5:00 pm.  Fee: $26 R; $28 NR.

ACTIVE ADULT ADVENTURES
(Ages 10-14 years old)

Sept. 3,  Hiking at Ivestor Gap—GREEN

A lovely 3-4 mile out & back trail in the beautiful Black Balsam area.  Bring along a small container for blueberries, we’ll try to find some!  Van ride is approximately one hour plus.  Depart Recreation Office at 9:30am. Fee: $2; NR

 

Oct. 8, Virginia Creep Biking—BLUE

A 2-3 mile trail in West Asheville, winding to a beautiful view of the City,  Van ride is approximately 15 minutes.  Depart Recreation Office at 9:30am. Fee: $2R; NR

Red—Challenging Activity at a  Vigorous Pace

SENIOR TREKS
Senior Treks is a low-impact hiking club, offering leisurely-paced hikes.  Bring lunch, water, good walking shoes and proper clothing.  Must be in good physical condition to participate.  Transportation is provided in a 15-passenger van.  Meet at  Recreation Office at 72 Gashes Creek Road at 9:30 am. Pre-registration required.  Fee: $2 per hike
